When it comes to Shakespeare’s tragedies, King Lear never made the short list of personal favorites. Maybe it was Cordelia, one of the biggest doormats in dramatic history, or maybe a play about madness and aging isn’t best served to high school students. But, as long as there are actors who want to sink their teeth into lines like, “As flies to wanton boys, are we to the gods. They kill us for their sport”, then the mad king will live on. The Guardian has now confirmed that Naomi Watts will be joining Keira Knightley and Gwyneth Paltrow as the ‘daughters Lear’ in the big-budgeted version of Shakespeare’s classic play, also starring Anthony Hopkins.
The story of Lear centers on a mighty king dividing his estate among his three daughters: Cordelia (Knightley), Regan (Paltrow) and Goneril (Watts). When Cordeila is unable to blow enough smoke up the royal butt, she is disowned, and the lion’s share of the throne goes to her sisters. But we all know about ‘fatal flaws’ in Shakespeare, and it turns out that Regan and Goneril are hardly the loving daughters they claimed to be.
The project was announced back in May at Cannes, with a projected budget of $35 million. Most of that is expected to go towards the epic battle sequences that occur when the kingdom descends into the family feud to end all feuds — not to mention $35 million can buy an awful lot of tights.
King Lear is expected to start production early next year and should arrive in theaters in 2010.

Robert Zemeckis directs: A Christmas Carol, a two-man show starring Jim Carrey and Gary Oldman!
While I kid, the above is pretty much accurate. Back in November of last year, Erik posted that Oldman had joined the production that already had Carrey playing Ebenezer Scrooge, as well as the three ghosts who visit the old man to tell him the error of his ways. Now SciFi.com reports that Oldman is playing the rest of the production’s big characters — Tiny Tim, Bob Cratchit, and Marley. Considering the fact that Oldman played a little person in the largely ignored Tiptoes, I’m betting he can physically hit all of these performances out of the park. Why two stars are playing most of the characters, however, I have no idea. (I’m not complaining, but it is surprising.)
But I wonder: What about Cary Elwes? He was also mentioned to be a stand-in for Jim Carrey, while a reader swore he was acting alongside the two stars. Maybe he has all the secondary parts?

Jason Schwartzman is officially coming to HBO. The actor will play the lead in Bored to Death, a new comedy from the cable network. Schwartzman has been cast as Jonathan, a struggling writer in this thirties who has a drinking problem. The series, which is set in Brooklyn, follows Jonathan’s post-breakup decision to pretend to be a private eye.
Although he’s not qualified for detective work, Jonathan loves the novels of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. He’ll luck out and solve a few cases, but his lack of experience will often make matters worse for his clients. Novelist Jonathan Ames wrote the pilot and will serve as the show’s executive producer.

At the beginning of this year, there was news that Drew Barrymore and Ellen Page were setting their sights on Whip It! — a flick about snarky chicks, toughness, and roller derby action. It sounded like a whole wackload of fun. The rumored March start date came and went without a sound, but now, luckily, things are on track for this summer. Even better: The Hollywood Reporter posts that joining Page and Barrymore on-screen will be Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, Juliette Lewis, and Zoe Bell.
Page is playing Bliss Cavendar, a beauty queen who runs away to join the roller derby league in Austin, Texas. Harden will play her mom, an ex-beauty queen herself who wants her daughter out of the skates and back on the beauty circuit. Meanwhile, Wiig will play Bliss’ rolling mentor, Malice in Wonderland, Lewis will be top star Dinah Might, and Bell will be “a medical technician moonlighting as derby star Bloody Holly.” With first-time feature director Drew Barrymore taking on a role as Page’s teammate, that’s one heck of a roller roster.
I wonder if 5′1″ Page will have to take on 5′8″ Bell? Hell, I’m trying to imagine how she’d do against anyone, being as teeny as she is. We should find out soon enough — the film heads into production this summer in Texas and Michigan.

The casts are coming together for Fox’s new pilots Virtuality and Inseparable. Malik Yoba, who was on Girlfriends, and Warren Kole, who has appeared briefly on CSI: Miami and 24, have joined the cast. The show is a Jekyll and Hyde story of sorts. It follows partially-paralyzed forensic psychiatrist Justin Lamreaux who has a split personality. Lamreaux, played by Lloyd Owen, shares his life with his criminal alter ego Clyde. I’m not sure about this one. I’m sick of all the crime procedurals, and Dexter may have beat them to the punch on the half criminal/half cop concept.
On Inseparable, Yoba and Kole will play detectives: Yoba, an officer who works with the main character but is unaware of his condition; Kole, a young officer ready to move on up.
Erik Jensen, Jose Pablo Cantillo, and Clea DuVall were added to Fox’s two-hour pilot Virtuality. The show is set on the Phaeton, a starship exploring other solar systems. Jensen of The Bronx is Burning will play the ship’s navigator. Cantillo of Standoff will play a mathematician. And DuVall, who was in Heroes and starred in Carnivale, will play Jensen’s co-pilot.
What do you think of these new pilots?

According to Variety, Matthew Fox is in talks to play the title character in Warner Bros’ Billy Smoke, an adaptation of Oni Press’s newest comic book series. Don’t feel bad if you’re wondering who the hell Billy Smoke is, and why you can’t keep up with comic books these days — it won’t be published until next year. Oni Press doesn’t even have a preview of it up, so we can’t judge it based on six pages.
However, the story goes a little something like this: Smoke is an elite hit man, who is nearly killed during a botched job. He has a change of heart, and realizes that his only way to find redemption is to rid the world of all assassins. It’s waking up the ghost of another film in my brain, but I’ll be damned if I can remember what it is. Readers?
The series is being written by by B. Clay Moore, who already has racked up some luck in the movie business. His graphic novel, Leading Man, was recently optioned by Universal. And yes, that too is published by Oni Press. I’m a little worried they are actually taking over Hollywood, as this is the fifth book of theirs to be optioned by a studio. The Last Call was bought just last week. I’m not sure what titles are even left to buy at this point — may I nominate Polly and the Pirates?

Our Monday morning roundup of a half dozen things TV Squad readers - and TV fans in general - will be talking about this week.
1. The SAG/studios mess. Sure, it looks like there isn’t going to be a strike (not yet anyway), but both sides are still far apart and one could still happen.
2. The Moment of Truth summer finale. Lives are destroyed for cash. Yay! (Tuesday at 8 on FOX.)
3. The Secret Life of the American Teenager. I think pregnant teenagers are about to take over the world. (Tonight at 9 on ABC Family.)
4. Hell’s Kitchen. We’re down to the final two contestants (Petrozza and Christina). Whoopi Goldberg guest stars … for some reason. (Tuesday at 9 on FOX.)
5. It’s Six Feet Under Week here at TV Squad. Come reminisce about your favorite deaths!
6. The Wimbledon Final. I think Federer or Nadal might be in the final. You think? (Sunday at 9am on NBC.)

The women of the porn world are known for having certain physical talents, but is one of them cracking the bones of weak men? Quentin Tarantino seems to think so, according to Page Six. They say the director, who is remaking Russ Meyer’s Faster, Pussycat, Kill! Kill!, has his sights set on Tera Patrick to play Varla, the role originally played by Tura Satana, and the star says: “It would be the hottest remake ever, and I’m honored to be considered. I was built for this part.”
I see the resemblance, not to mention the (very) similar first name, but I wonder if she can pull off that snarl and imposing physical presence. The beauty of Tura, which you can see above, is that she always looked sexy, tough, and mean — and she was shapely, but still big enough that she wasn’t some petite sort of butt kicker, but a raven-haired Amazonian. Then again, I’m not familiar with Tera’s work, so maybe someone out there can weigh in on her suitability. Can Tera Kill! Kill!?

The script for Terminator Salvation must be all kinds of magic, because it’s attracting the most unlikely of people. The Hollywood Reporter announced today that Helena Bonham Carter is in talks to join the cast, which already includes some pretty fine actors. Exactly who or what she will play is not mentioned, merely that her part is “small, but pivotal.”
So, let the speculation begin! As Sarah Connor has morphed to a lovely brunette Lena Headey in The Sarah Connor Chronicles, perhaps she will be playing her in a flashback? (I know, the television show is on a separate mythology/timeline as the films, but I have to consider all the possibilities.) Could she be a Terminator model, despite her petiteness? A vital designer of SkyNet? A baker who comes up with an industrious way to dispose of fallen soldiers and feed what’s left of humanity? I’m at a loss here.
Bonham Carter has certainly moved away from her Merchant and Ivory days. Who would have ever thought the adorable Lucy Honeychurch was going to be Bellatrix Lestrange, let alone go post-apocalyptic? Oddly, her attachment interests me far more than even Christian Bale’s. And there, I have to hand it to McG — every time I think my vague interest in this movie is dead, he finds a way to stir it up again.
Terminator Salvation is aiming to hit theatres on May 22nd, 2009. That is going to be one enormous summer, isn’t it?
