This Mother’s Day, Tori Amos wanted to extend a special gift to all mothers in the best way she knows how: with song. ‘Maybe California’ — off her May 19th-due album, ‘Abnormally Attracted to Sin’ — was written, as she describes it, from one mother to another, who, as the lyrics explore, is contemplating suicide. The tune itself is meant as a saving grace, of sorts.
“There are people in our lives, and we all know them, that are able to give even in the darkest of times,” Amos, who has an 8-year-old daughter, Natashya, says. “Even when they seem depleted. But somehow by giving, they gain this magical light. Even the most giving person needs a gift every once and a while, just to know they are seen and appreciated. ‘Maybe California’ is my gift to you.” SOURCE

good morning! oh i hate to keep on harping about michael jackson but he’s so bizarre and fascinating at the same time - i can’t help myself! yesterday he was here in los angeles shopping again - this time with his three children paris, prince michael I, and prince michael II (aka blanket) and of course all three kids were wearing masks to cover up their faces - just like daddy! maybe when they were younger michael wanted to protect them from being splashed all over the press but at this point i think the masks need to come off and be left at home - no other celebrity makes their kids wear masks out in public - i find the situation to be really strange! i wonder if they think it’s normal to go around wearing masquerade masks all of the time? just like the time eventually comes for kids to go off the bottle - i think it’s time for these kids to not have to cover themselves up like they do! i cannot wait for the inevitable tell-all books about growing up with mr. jackson as a father … i seriously bet there’s some even more bizarre stories still yet to be told! popbytes over & out for now … xoxo

Fie Louis Leterrier, and all of the people behind the Clash of the Titans remake! I have to admit, Liam Neeson as Zeus and Ralph Fiennes as Hades tempted my curiosity, and now I can’t help but see it. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Danny Huston is the next man of the Titans, and he will play Poseidon — God of the Sea. Leterrier only knows how much this will mean for the actor, since this so-called remake is switching up the story left, right, and center. Maybe this time around, we’ll see the old guy get sexy with Medusa. Whatever the case, this is one more big flick for Huston, and maybe one day we’ll get some solid starring work, and a North American release for Fade to Black while we’re at it. (What’s Fade to Black? Why, it’s the film where he stars as Orson Welles. A project that also boasts Paz Vega, Christopher Walken, and Diego Luna.)
Meanwhile, Mr. Big isn’t ready to say no to more Sex. Variety reports that Chris Noth has finally committed to Sex and the City 2. He might have taken a while to agree, but this news isn’t exactly surprising. You might, however, be surprised by this little nibblet: The deal was for SEVEN figures. Talk about being a lucrative co-star. The sequel starts production in September, and is set for a May 28, 2010 release.

I’m of the mind that Franka Potente needs to get some mainstream work that stretches beyond the confines of sexy girl for Matt Damon or Johnny Depp. Usually, that would lead me to grumble over another indie thriller she was involving herself with, but this time, it might be worth it. Twitch reports that Julian Gilbey, the man behind Rise of the Footsoldier and Rollin’ with the Nines, is gearing up for a pretty cool cliffside thriller, and Potente will star. There’s a bit of confusion on just what this project is about, and unfortunately, I think this plot will decide it all.
On the official website, the outlined story details a couple taking a trip into the Rocky Mountains, and how Franka flees into the woods when a hunting party kills her man in a drug-induced panic, and how said party tries to chase her down to keep their hides safe. Typical, and not very fresh.
However, the story that’s outlined in the below concept reel outlines a different, and more intriguing story. It says that this project will focus on some climbers high in the mountains who find a young girl buried alive — the victim of a kidnapping plot. Franka’s character tries to help while a group of mercenaries hired to rescue the girl hunt them down. I’d take two groups fighting for a girl’s safety over creepy drug-hazed hunters any day — lots more to explore and dig into. Regardless, this should make for an interesting film, since the concept reel is all about Gilbey actually getting out there and climbing mountains himself for the project. Furthermore, he talks about the importance of not relying on sets, which makes for an interesting 5 minutes, and potentially, a film to keep your eye on.

It’s rare to get an actor like Lost’s Michael Emerson on a network TV show. He’s quirky, slightly off-kilter (I mean that in a good way), unpredictable with his line readings, and someone that can do as much with a look on his face as with a speech of 1000 words. In other words, he’s a good actor. Here’s a clip from TV Guide where Emerson talks about filming that “judgment” scene with the Smoke Monster (yes, I’m capitalizing it), the show’s 100th episode (this Wednesday), and what it’s like to actually be recognized by people on the street.

Parade.com has been kind enough to ask us to do another quiz; this time it’s about the ABC smash Dancing with the Stars. Because I’m about as far from a DWTS expert as you can get, I decided to ask my assistant editor, Jane, to take the reins on this one. She did a pretty nice job, even though she only had the current season to work with.
Because the quiz has to do with events that happened outside the show, I actually did pretty well, all things considered; I got seven out of fifteen right. How did I do so well? Think of this key word: injuries! Wow, the show has had so many freak injuries, it looks more like Monday Night Football than a dancing contest (although Lawrence Taylor probably thinks it’s all par for the course, given his Monday Night history).
Anyway, go take the quiz at Parade.com, then come back here and let us know how you did.

For those who are unaware, the Bradbury Award (named after science fiction writer Ray Bradbury) is a special honor given at the Nebula Awards, which themselves are hosted by the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers Association. The Bradbury Award honors excellence in screenwriting as it relates to science fiction and/or fantasy.
Granted, the news that Joss Whedon is the recipient of this award is not new. In fact, the announcement of his victory was made two months ago. However, the official ceremony was this past weekend, and he didn’t get hit by a bus in the interim or catch swine flu or have anything bad happen to him that would have prevented his receipt of the award in that time. And now, his award is complete.

Did someone hear about that Imaginary Larry pic and think: “Gee, why make something like Drop Dead Fred when we can just remake Drop Dead Fred?”I think so. The Hollywood Reporter posts that the box office bust and subsequent cult favorite is getting a makeover, and Russell Brand is going to head the whole thing.
Yes, he’ll play the wacky imaginary character, but things will be a bit different this time around. Of course, there will be no Phoebe Cates (which is a huge strike against it in my book … viva la Cates!), and instead of a straight remake, this will be whipped up in the “tone of Beetlejuice, building a universe around the concept of imaginary friends.” There’s a lesson to live by: If you want to remake something that failed, Beetlejuice it! Dennis McNicholas, who lent a pen to the Land of the Lost remake, will pen the screenplay.
I’m sure Brand will do fine with this, because wacky is his thing, whether it’s playing the insane new boyfriend of Sarah Marshall, taking it to the upcoming Get Him to the Greek, or playing the jester-riffic Trinculo in The Tempest. But maybe, just maybe, it’ll quickly get old? Obviously, I’m indifferent to the whole thing, but what say you? Is this hurting your Fred-fan heart, or making you jump with glee?

In her Oscar-winning movie Funny Girl, Barbra Streisand as Fanny Brice described herself as “a bagel on a plateful of onion rolls.” Last night, CBS served up the Barbra bagel in the one-hour TV special Streisand Live 2006. As music specials go it was a delicious serving of all-time great hits like “Somewhere,” “Evergreen,” “The Way We Were” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade.” But at just an hour — probably 48 minutes considering the commercials — the show just wasn’t enough. It was a smidge of Streisand. I wanted the whole thing.
From a marketing point of view, this was probably just what the Streisand camp wanted. On Tuesday, April 28, Sony is releasing a 3-DVD set of Barbra TV concerts, including the full, two-hour-plus version of Streisand Live 2006. So in many ways, the CBS special was an extended preview, an infomercial, a nibble that would make you want to buy the DVD.
