Why settle for being “Miss Congeniality” when you can be Best Actress?

And, for many, in her shimmering Marchesa gown, Sandra Bullock also earned Best Dressed at last night’s 2010 Oscars ceremony.

But how does the star’s metallic number stack up against her gowns from Oscars past? Glad you asked…

Take a look back at Bullock’s red carpet style.

Sandra Bullocks Oscar Style Evolution

For her first Oscars, in ‘96, Bullock hit the red carpet in a classic Calvin Klein chocolate brown gown, big, big hair and a giant choker she must have purchased “While You Were Sleeping.”

We give high marks for Bullock’s pinkish-beige floral embroidered Richard Tyler dress from 1997 with its plunging neckline, but her heavy makeup doesn’t stand the test of time. Thank God.

An elegant up-do and a black paillette-accented Valentino gown helped Bullock channel her sexy side at the 2002 Oscars.

Bullock went the bridal route for the 2004 Oscars, turning up in a form-fitting ivory Oscar de la Renta that got ribbed for its Anna Nicole-esque feather trim. The lesson: If it reminds people of Bjork, don’t wear it.

Proving that glamour and comfort go hand-in-hand, Sandra Bullock donned a strapless navy blue Angel Sanchez gown boasting pockets to the 78th Annual Academy Awards in 2006. Funny — if we were co-presenting with dreamboat Keanu Reeves, we’d want to keep our hands free…

A silver sparkling, floor-length Marchesa column dress proved to be good luck for Bullock last night — and we think it’s no accident that the metallic hue complemented her statuette oh so well. Paired with bold pink lips and a sleek side part, the gown helped seal Bullock’s transition from quirky America’s Sweetheart to serious leading lady.

What’s a Best Actress winner to do now that she has to drag her new pal “Oscar” all around town?

Well, if you’re Sandra Bullock, you have it all figured out. “The Blind Side” star wants a big Louis Vuitton bag. (And really, Oscar winner or not, who doesn’t?)

Bullock arrived on the set of Oprah’s post-Oscars TV show today in a sleek, dark-colored pantsuit with her gold statue in tow.

She seemed smitten with her shiny new companion, which coordinated perfectly with the metallic Marchesa gown she wore to last night’s Oscars.

Only problem: The little gold man is a bit heftier than Bullock expected.

“I mean, where do you stash this thing?” she asked the talk show host. “I hope Louis Vuitton makes me something big.”

We have a feeling that this leading lady will have a big LV bag coming right up, along with the burgers, fries and soft-serve Bullock told Oprah she planned to gorge on now that the pressure of fitting into all her awards ceremony gowns is off.

Maybe Oscar would fit in one of these Louis carryalls.

Whether they attended the Oscar ceremonies or not, these Hollywood’s A-listers hit the party circuit dressed in their best designer garments. Immediately following the show, there were a plethora of parties to choose from, but anyone who wasn’t at the Govenor’s Ball (i.e. those who weren’t nominated) made a beeline for Vanity Fair’s annual fete at Sunset Towers where hobnobbing is a serious sport. Hilary Swank was here, there and everywhere in her cutaway Armani Privé frock. Heidi Klum opted for a ’60s mod look, and Kate Bosworth looked like couture cotton candy in a pink Valentino confection.

Meanwhile, at the Pacific Coast Design Center, Elton John and David Furnish welcomed Selma Hayek (in space aged Alexander McQueen), Kelly Osbourne (in a feathered Sue Wong frock) and Eva Amurri (looking darling in J.Crew), to their annual shindig which benefits the Elton John AIDS foundation.

The previous evening, Chanel kicked off the festive 24-hours with a dinner at Madeo’s. There were no overtly ostentatious ensembles here, just elegant women wearing mainly all black. Among those who made their way through rain-splattered L.A. for the affair were Robin Wright Penn, Marisa Tomei, and Minnie Driver. In the sea of darkness, Olivia Thrilby, ever the indie actress, stood out in a sweet red dress.

Jessica Capshaw at the Judith Leiber store. Photo: Patrick McMullan

Over the weekend, in the midst of all the Oscar madness, Jessica Capshaw took a break from shooting “Grey’s Anatomy” to host an event at the Judith Leiber store benefiting Healthy Child Healthy World. (Her husband, Christopher Gavigan, is the charity’s CEO.) The concept: 100 Judith Leiber handbags were priced exclusively at $100 with all of the proceeds donated to the non-profit, which helps parents protect children from harmful chemicals.

New Yorkers who understand a real deal-a crocodile Lieber clutch was originally priced at $3300, for instance-dominated the scene, including power publicist Peggy Siegal, stylist and television personality Mary Alice Stephenson, former Times editor and tv scribe Ilene Rosenzweig, Lucy Sykes and Euan Rellie, and Healthy Child Healthy World spokesperson and TV actress Amy Brenneman. Waiters passed cucumber sandwiches and purple and white cookies inscribed with “JL” as lucky invitees fought over which $100 minaudière they’d go home with. (It was just one per customer, otherwise chaos might have ensued.)

“The edict here is it has to fit a Blackberry,” explained Decades owner Cameron Silver as to how to choose the proper bag. “It’s so great that Judith Leiber would host an event like this,” said Capshaw, as she raced out the door, leaving her husband to hold court. “And I’d love to stay, but I have to get back to Seattle Grace.”

On Oscar night, one gorgeous gown simply isn’t enough some of Tinseltown’s biggest stars. The actresses below made the most of the red carpet marathon by changing from award show frocks to after-party dresses. Naturally they all reconvened at the biggest fete of the evening - Vanity Fair’s annual bash at Sunset Towers.

The reigning queens of the red carpet, Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz know how to go from Gaga-esque gowns to downtown divas in no time.

J.Lo’s long black cutout number by Gucci is a stark contrast to the princess-like Armani Privé frock that she wore to the Oscars ceremony. In addition, she ditched her perfectly mussed bun in favor of a slicked back ponytail.

Diaz, meanwhile, ditched her embroidered Oscar de la Renta ballgown for a a one-shouldered Victoria Beckham dress from the Fall 2010 Collection. It was the second time in the evening that the actress touched on the omnipresent metallic trend.

“Avatar” actress Zoe Saldana earned top marks for her daring Givenchy Haute Couture confection made of ruched silk organza with degradé detail. Later in the evening, she chose to stick with Riccardo Tisci’s ombré designs with a look from the Fall 2009 couture collection.

Diane Kruger also went for a risqué look in Chanel Haute Couture for the Oscars. By the time the party started, she had slipped into a translucent red sheath by Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein Collection.

Like Saldana, Best Supporting Actress nominee Anna Kendrick stuck with the same designer for her Oscar and post-show party looks. Her long pale pink Elie Saab gown was swapped for a flirty white cocktail dress for the end of the night antics.

Her fellow ingenue, Amanda Seyfried, also opted out of her voluminous Armani Privé gown for a short Valentino whip of a dress. (The stacked Lorraine Schwartz cuffs remained firmly in place, though.)

queen latifah dress oscars 2010

Queen Latifah dazzles in Badgley Mishka Couture. Photo: Getty Images

While not everyone gets to take home a coveted golden statue, here’s something that certainly means a celeb has made the A-list: Style expert Phillip Bloch’s “Blochbuster” fashion award.

(And while it can’t be displayed on the mantel, just think, it’s one less thing the stars will have to dust.)

So, without further ado and, better yet, without commercial interruption, here’s Phillip Bloch and his Oscars 2010 best-dressed picks.

BEST ‘SUPPORTED’ ACTRESSES

All hail to the Queen. Latifah, that is. She stunned on the Oscars 2010 red carpet in a one-shoulder Badgley Mischka Couture embellished gown which hugged her curves perfectly. The star topped off her look with Chopard jewels.

Also in the beyond flattering category was Gabourey Sidibe, who finally got someone to do her justice on the red carpet. And that someone, as I previously predicted, was Georgina Chapman of Marchesa.

Sidibe stunned in a blue silk chiffon draped bodice gown with hand embellished crystal detail by the designer and Lorraine Schwartz diamonds (over 180 carats of them!).

And Gabby’s co-star/Oscar winner Mo’Nique also flattered her voluptuous figure in an electric blue Tadashi Shoji silk jersey ruched gown with jewel detail on the bodice. And check out the meaning behind the flower in her hair.

All three tied in my book for best ’supported’ actress by donning figure-flattering frocks.

BEST SHIMMERATOGRAPHY
Cameron Diaz sparkled in hues of gold — from her luxurious side-swept golden tresses to her golden bead encrusted strapless Oscar de la Renta gown.

BEST EDITING
Tina Fey finally edited through the last few not-so-beautiful dresses and found a winner in a beautiful black, beaded asymmetrical gown by Michael Kors, complete with a leg-baring slit.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
Sarah Jessica Parker “carried” us away away in her pale yellow billowy and bejeweled Chanel Couture gown, bringing sexy to the city of Los Angeles. Who else but this fashion icon could have pulled off this original score? Exactly.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN
Vera Farmiga donned a rich pomegranate tiered gown by Marchesa. The sculted pleated cascade down the dress brought high drama and a circus-inspired feel to the dress, yet the star still looked the perfect picture of elegance.

BEST SPECIAL EFFECTS
Carey Mulligan was once again a vision of modern chic and elegance. Her Prada gown was embellished with special effects of beading and miniature charms of knives, forks and scissors which garnered this newbie to the red carpet regalia. The second special effect was her adorable cropped haircut which has spawned a new trend to takeoff (and take off).

BEST PICTURE
Jennifer Lopez
made us weak in the knees once again; this time in a chic Armani Privé gown with an asymmetrical side-flowing train.

BEST ADAPTATION
Paula Patton was not only glamorous, but she has adapted to her pregnancy with breathtaking ease in an orange Carolina Herrera gown.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD:
Helen Mirren, one of our generation’s greatest actresses, continually brings elegance and class to the red carpet, often with the help of design duo Badgley Mischka. And tonight, in a lavender crystal embellished gown, was no exception.

BEST FOREIGN FILM
Rachel McAdams flowed across the stage in a pastel sweetheart neckline painterly Elie Saab gown made with panels of organza and mousseline. Saab, a Lebanese designer, is no foreigner to the Oscars, as I collaborated with him in 2002 on Halle Berry’s dress for her historic Oscars win.

BEST ACTRESS
Sandra Bullock, with whom I’ve worked with many times over the years, has always refused to be cast in the role of fashion victim, and tonight she has beyond a doubt become a Hollywood legend. She was a fashion star in a breathtaking silver beaded column gown with embroidered illusion bodice by Marchesa. Bullock is by all means deserved of not only her Oscar, but the Blochbuster Award for best dressed.

BEST ANIMATION
Zoe Saldana’s Givenchy Couture gown came to life in its other worldly dimensions with a rhinestone bustier, pink satin cummerbund and a graduated lavender-to-purple sculpted and ruffled train. She accessorized with 100 carats of Lorraine Schwartz diamonds — 20 carat platinum and diamond drop earrings and an 80 carat platinum and amethyst ring.

Gabourey Sidibe, Mariah Carey, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Mo’Nique sing the blues. Photos: Getty Images (4)

Avatar“’s blue people seem to have had quite an influence on the red carpet — among the gowns, that is, not just on Ben Stiller’s Na’vi-inspired onstage getup.

And appropriately enough, the two stars of “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” both wore sapphire-hued dresses. Gabourey Sidibe, nominated in the best actress category, wore what she called a “money shot” gown by Marchesa.

Sprays of hand-embroidered crystals embellished the neckline and waist of her silk chiffon, off-the-shoulder dress. Lorraine Schwartz decked her in blackened platinum-and-diamond bracelets, earrings and a ring.

Oscar winner Mo’Nique paid tribute to Hattie McDaniel with her royal blue gown and white flowers in her hair. McDaniel, the first African-American to win an Academy Award, had worn the same color and flowers when accepting her statue in 1940. Mo’Nique explained, “for you, Miss Hattie McDaniel, it’s about time the world feels you all over them.”

Maggie Gyllenhaal, best supporting actress nominee for “Crazy Heart,” went out on a limb with a boldly patterned Dries Van Noten strapless column dress. This last-minute choice had a splashy deep blue, black and white handpainted floral pattern. Her ivory-colored drop earrings were shaped like angel’s trumpet flowers.

Mariah Carey’s navy Valentino gown, meanwhile, showed a lot of leg. The softly draped skirt was held at the waist by a whopping, sparkling floral brooch. She accessorized with H. Stern’s Top Floral white gold-and-diamond bracelets and a pair of leg-lengthening nude platform heels by Christian Louboutin.

Oprah also chose navy for her moment onstage as a presenter, albeit with a lot more coverage.

One actor also had the blue blazes — Robert Downey, Jr. wore blue-tinted sunglasses and an oversized blue bowtie!

All that glimmers…Bullock, Diaz, and Winslet opt for metallic dresses. Photo: Getty Images (3)

Perhaps taking a cue from the most recent ready-to-wear collections in Paris, a smattering of actresses at this evening’s Academy Awards wore metallic dresses.

Best Actress winner Sandra Bullock chose an embroidered column by Marchesa; Cameron Diaz opted for crystalized frock by Oscar de la Renta; and last year’s big winner, Kate Winslet, exhibited pared down elegance in Yves Saint Laurent. The gowns chosen by the latter two were also strapless - which happened to be another reoccurring trend.

Bare shoulders were also seen on the likes of Julianne Moore (in a silvery Calvin Klein) as well as Amanda Seyfried (in Armani Privé) and Miley Cyrus (in Jenny Packham). Both of the younger actresses accessorized with stacked bangles, too.

Check out the full gallery of fashionable winners right here.

jennifer lopez amanda seyfried oscars 2010 armani prive lady gaga

Taking a page out of Lady Gaga’s red carpet style book might not seem like a wise choice for Hollywood’s leading ladies, but that’s exactly what both Amanda Seyfried and Jennifer Lopez did at the 2010 Oscars.

You might recall Lady Gaga’s ensemble for the Grammys earlier this year — a sparkly and sculptural custom-made Armani Privé masterpiece which had her channeling Saturn with its three-dimensional swirling hoops.

Likewise, J.Lo chose a glittering and sculpted Armani Privé dress for the 2010 Oscar festivities — the dress hugged her curves and featured an explosion of fabric at her left hip. (Like a side train.)

“It has to have that wow factor,” Lopez, who dazzled in Cartier jewels, told ABC in a pre-show interview when asked about what makes a great Oscar dress. “You have to be able to walk around in it all night and be able to wear it and feel good.”

For her own red carpet moment, Amanda Seyfried also choose a glassy and dazzling Armani Privé strapless number like J.Lo’s, with a super structured bodice and pleats bursting from her right hip that created an uber-voluminous skirt.

Luckily both Lopez and Seyfried didn’t follow Gaga’s lead when it came to their beauty routines — going for understated makeup and elegant updo’s instead of Gaga’s two-tone banana-hued Grammys hair.

Which lady rocked her Armani red carpet look the best?

Shine on you crazy diamonds! SJP and Amanda Seyfried opt for the short stack. Photo: Getty Images (2)

At the Oscars this evening, actresses Sarah Jessica Parker and Amanda Seyfried each chose to accent their couture gowns with impressive stacks of diamond bangles.

Parker, wearing a pale yellow silk Chanel Haute Couture dress, complimented her sleeveless frock with a mass of beautiful bangles from Fred Leighton. The “Sex and the City” star had at least eight of the glittery accessories on her arm. (Oh to be at the Oscars!)

Seyfried’s Lady Gaga-esque Armani Privé gown - already a sparkler in its own right - caught a little extra shimmer with three super-sized Lorraine Schwartz cuffs.

Also tapping into short stack trend? Penelope Cruz, Miley Cyrus, Mariah Carey, and Faith Hill.

So, ladies, take note. The next time you’re readying for a night out on the town, instead of putting on one bracelet, try three, or four, or more!
